I use kindergartner Tarak McClain's list of 30 beliefs for mini-lessons/class discussions on:

Martin Luther King
"I refuse to accept the cynical notion that nation after nation must spiral down a militaristic stairway into the hell of thermonuclear destruction. I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right temporarily defeated is stronger than evil triumphant. I believe that even amid today's mortar bursts and whining bullets, there is still hope for a brighter tomorrow. I believe that wounded justice, lying prostrate on the blood-flowing streets of our nations, can be lifted from this dust of shame to reign supreme among the children of men. I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality and freedom for their spirits. I believe that what self-centered men have torn down men other-centered can build up. I still believe that one day mankind will bow before the altars of God and be crowned triumphant over war and bloodshed, and nonviolent redemptive good will proclaim the rule of the land. "And the lion and the lamb shall lie down together and every man shall sit under his own vine and fig tree and none shall be afraid." I still believe that We Shall overcome!"

If you are one who doesn't, then trust me here, you should consider trying this personal essay assignment with your students this year; I love what I learn about my eighth graders with this piece of writing. I've also taught variations of this essay with fourth grade and up, and I've also used the "This I Believe" asssignment in the post-graduate classes I taught at our local University when I was an adjunct professor for multiple summers.

A public dialogue about belief — one essay at a time.

"This I Believe" essays are not my own idea; they have been around since Edward R. Murrow began sharing them on the air back in 1951. Here is Murrow's own explanation of the value of these essays: . Here are two "This I Believe" essay resources that inspired me to create my own online adaptation of this famous essay assignment.

With all essay/expository assignments, I believe it's crucial to teach some skills of organization--particularly "paragraphing with purpose" skills. This personal essay assignment write-up of mine focuses on quality paragraphing as its most essential skill; as a secondary trait focus, my students who could handle a second trait worked on skills from voice, word choice, or sentence fluency skills; often, I let them choose which of those they'd like to work on when they compose.
