If a trainee refuses to do what they are told by a person of higher rank, or do something they aren’t supposed to be doing, they are made to do push-ups as punishment for insubordination. If an illegal action had been taken, military personnel may even be given jail time. The goal is to teach respect of those around the trainee, and respect for position or rank.
