Identity and Character: Beyond the Limbo Silence essay

N2 - Chinese economic and political development have forged ahead "from stone to stone in crossing the river," increasingly aleatory in its progress as it moves into deeper waters. We contend in this essay that the analysis of Chinese politics has so too fallen into a sort of limbo. There is no longer a "key link" - such as Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought, politics in command, or class struggle - to explain the movement's direction. Despite the resurgent vitality of the transformation overtaking the country, the precise source and thrust of that dynamism has diversified and become far less obvious. The field of Chinese political analysis has changed and grown as China has changed and grown, becoming increasingly polycentric, ambiguous, and sophisticated.

Moreover, the causes of its limbo are often beyond the control of language speakers in question.

As a disclaimer, my purpose is not to argue that Aristotle intended the enthymeme to be used for aesthetic analysis. Instead, I wish to repurpose the enthymeme as a means of describing artistic phenomena in addition to its well-founded use as a persuasive tool. Also, other terms may better describe LIMBO’s aesthetics, but my purpose is to show how the enthymeme is one concept out of many that can improve our understanding of appeals to enjoyment. With the theoretical introduction to the enthymeme in mind, I would now like to focus the remainder of this essay on exploring LIMBO’s visuals. The game’s visuals utilize the enthymeme through the use of a black/white color palette, the reliance on shape and outlines to portray objects and characters, and its shallow depth of focus.

Though I have argued that LIMBO is an example of the enthymeme at work, specifically through the game’s visual, aural, and gameplay design, the enthymeme is not the only interpretive framework that could conceivably be used to understand how the game evokes enjoyment. In fact, I propose that the enthymeme is just that: an interpretive framework that expounds hitherto unexplained phenomena through the lens of rhetoric. Furthermore, I have argued that rhetoric may function outside the realm of argumentation, whether implicitly or explicitly, by applying principles of rhetorical strategy to artistic endeavors. The fact that I chose a game for my investigation is simply indicative of how games have most often been seen as instruments of quote-unquote “mere” enjoyment, and I wished to further justify games as a site of rich rhetorical and artistic analysis. I could have chosen a book, film, speech, or various other expressions of human creativity, and as long as it demonstrates the principles I have laid out in this essay they could have served my purposes. My goal was to demonstrate how the enthymeme might be reappropriated to reveal how rhetoric may operate at the service of enjoyment, and not just for argument or persuasion. In other words, rhetoric itself, such as the enthymeme, may be inherently enjoyable, and as such it can lend itself to artistic analysis.
