As qualitative inquiry has gained wider acceptance in genetic counseling research, it has become increasingly important for researchers and those who evaluate their work to recognize the diversity of methods that fall under this broad umbrella. Some of these methods adhere to the traditional conventions of scientific research (e.g., objectivity, reliability, validity, replicability, causality and generalizability). When such studies are evaluated by reviewers who are well versed in scientific methods, the rigor of the study may be readily apparent. However, when researchers are using methods that do not conform to traditional scientific conventions, the distinction between well conducted and poorly conducted studies may become more difficult to discern. This article focuses on grounded theory because it is a widely used qualitative method. We highlight key components of this method in order to contrast conventions that fall within a scientific paradigm to those that fall within an interpretivist paradigm. The intent is to illustrate how the conventions within these two different paradigms yield different types of knowledge claims—both of which can advance genetic counseling theory and practice.
Well-balanced and consistent nutrition is vital for older people's quality of life, positive health outcomes, maintenance of independence and, in the hospital setting, reduced length of stay, fewer post-operative complications and lower likelihood of readmission. Yet, studies have shown that malnutrition affects almost 1 out of every 4 older people and is particularly prevalent among older people with dementia. Around two-thirds of people with dementia are malnourished or at risk for malnutrition. Recent Wicking research has identified important barriers to provision of person-centred care in aged care facilities to meet nutrition and hydration needs of people with dementia. The research project will build on this research to explore how changes can be made to care practices in either the residential aged care or acute care setting to better meet the nutrition and hydration needs of people with dementia. It may utilise qualitative, quantitative or mixed methods research approaches. Examples of research methods that may be used are ethnographic observations, surveys, nutritional screening tools, and interviews with staff, people living with dementia, and their family members.

Every single cell within a human body contains the same genetic “code”, which is exquisitely controlled by epigenetic mechanisms that ultimately dictate cell developmental processes, somatic cell behaviour and function. It is exceeding clear that dysregulation of normal epigenetic programs contributes to disease onset and progression; this has been demonstrated extensively in cancer cells. However, critical mechanisms underlying the onset of epigenetic changes in cancer compared to those that occur as part of our normal ageing process remain to be discovered. We are at the cutting-edge of this emerging field and are producing epigenetic datasets using next-generation sequencing techniques (ChIP-Seq, whole genome bisulphite sequencing) with a focus on capturing multiple epigenetic layers in ageing cells and in cancer and neurodefective models. This project will enable the successful candidate to build a diverse range of computational biology and bioinformatics skills (dry-lab) as well as molecular and epigenetic techniques by creating new data in the laboratory (wet-lab). This project will be co-supervised by Dr Phillippa Taberlay (Cell, Genome Research, Cancer Cell, PNAS) and Dr Adele Woodhouse (J. NeuroScience, Elife, Neurobiology of Aging).
