How to Write a Compare and Contrast Essay - wikiHow
One of the main themes that emerges from Kurt Vonnegut’s book is the concept of repression. This can be seen in the form of either basic or surplus repression. Basic repression refers to the amount that should be repressed in order for a person to acquire supplies of items such as food, transport, and water. Surplus repression refers to the amount of work needed so that a person can acquire luxury items. The majority of the people in the world work for basic repression. They are looking to fulfil their basic needs. The unfair system in the world means that such people work the hardest for low earnings. They work day and night so that they do not have to go hungry or so that their children can have proper health care and schooling. The people who work for surplus repression are few but they control many of the factors of production. As such, the balance of power is always in their favor. They are able to manipulate the system so that the poor are always working with little chances of advancement. Vonnegut addresses this in his book by describing this as a madness. This can be compared to the theme that emerges from Notes from the Underground. The narrator is a former civil servant who gives a reflection of human society (Dostoevsky, 1864). He shows that most people are concerned with their wellbeing to the point of being unhappy. For instance, he notes that he seeks to be happy but he is held back by liver pains and a troublesome tooth. His concerns about these issues only lead to an increase in his unhappiness. This shows that people are only concerned with the small details in their lives rather than looking forward to the greater things.
