In the case study below, a multi-country example from the South Pacific region illustrates a series of school and community based strategies that the region is using to target childhood obesity. The OPIC project is a collaborative effort funded by a myriad of collaborators including the Wellcome Trust, New Zealand Health Research Council, and the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia in the Pacific region. The example presents the various types of stakeholders engaged, including faith-based organizations.

Examples of Experiential Learning Activities: 1. Clean up roadsides, parks, etc. of trash and recycle things that are recyclable, 2. Clean up communities after disasters such as tornadoes, floods, etc. 3. Construct homes, churches/mosques etc. in disadvantaged communities, 4. Perform other activities that put into action the principles of this course.

In his research he discovers that student opinion on community service and civic engagement was based upon the structure of the program.

Community engagement strategies include partnership building and networking, community mobilization and community coalition building, which are terms used interchangeably. Community mobilization efforts may take the form of a small group of interested participants working collaboratively towards a common goal without a formalized structure all the way through to formalized networks or coalitions that can be formed with a clear leadership structure.

Civic engagement programs allow students to become a part of their community, which improves students’ social and moral experiences.
