Clinical Case Studies for the Family Nurse Practitioner
There is an increasing awareness of the importance of interdisciplinary learning to facilitate the effective working of the multidisciplinary healthcare team in service delivery. We are beginning to see how challenging it is to promote interdisciplinary service when learning has occurred in unidisciplinary silos. Is there an opportunity in the clinical setting to bring together students from programs such as nursing, midwifery, medicine, occupational therapy and physiotherapy to consider a common patient problem and to search out and discuss relevant research findings? For example, at McMaster University, a multidisciplinary team has been awarded funds from the provincial government to develop models for collaborative education and collaborative service delivery in long-term care, including family medicine residents, nurse practitioner students and pharmacy students. It is envisioned that both models will include the opportunity for these interdisciplinary learners and clinicians to work together through patient problems, identifying and using best evidence in their clinical decision-making.
Students will be expected to articulate their competence as an accountable practitioner within a healthcare team and as an advocate for applied ethics in contemporary practice. A range of management styles will be considered for their impact on quality care and working practices. The use of evidence in clinical decision making, which respects partnership with service users, carers, agencies and other professionals will be the endpoint of leaning.
Nursing Process and Clinical Decision Making Essays
Suggested Format for the assignment
Below is a suggested format to assist you in developing your assignment, but please feel free to structure it in whatever way you believe addresses the assignment requirements.
Explain briefly the context; state aim of the essay; and very briefly introduce your overall argument (a very brief summary of major issues and recommendations).
Provide relevant background information about the patient and the situation, including the pathophysiology and psychosocial aspects. Identify and describe the clinical decision and the main issue or problem within the context of nursing practice and health care delivery. Explain why this issue or problem is important. Support this information with current Australian and International research.
Use the clinical reasoning cycle to critically explore the clinical decision you have been involved in (this process will be explored and discussed in the tutorials). For example, you may consider in this section:
• An explanation of how the decision occurred and what the influencing factors were. Impact on patient care, nursing standards, nursing practice, policies and procedures. Support your information with current research of best practice and decision-making processes. Link the clinical decision making case study to the National competency standards for the registered nurse if relevant or applicable.
• An exploration of the main problem or issue in the case study. Evaluate the effectiveness of actions and explore errors that may have occurred. These errors or assumptions may have influenced the clinical decision and it is important you identify them and explore them.
Reflective practice and Recommendations
• Critically reflect on the clinical decision making process. Reflect upon your experience of this situation and identify and discuss your reflections.
• Include recommendations, that is, a course of action that could have been followed to overcome problems identified. This may also include future professional development for you or nurses generally.
Summarise the key points made in the essay, and restate your overall recommendations.
Essays will be marked on-line. Submission points will be released closer to the due date (hard copy submission not accepted).
